What Are Consumer Rights?

When you buy something in Australia, you have rights. The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) protects you when you purchase goods or services from a business.

Your Rights When You Buy Something

The product must be:

  • Safe to use
  • Of acceptable quality
  • Fit for the purpose you bought it for
  • Match what was advertised
  • Last for a reasonable amount of time

If Something Goes Wrong

Within 30 days:

  • If it’s faulty, you can request a repair, replacement, or refund

After 30 days:

  • If it’s faulty, you can still claim if it’s within a reasonable time
  • “Reasonable time” depends on the product and how it’s used

Common Situations

Online shopping: Consumer law still applies to online purchases Defective product: You’re entitled to a refund or replacement Misleading advertising: If a business misrepresents a product, you have rights Gift cards: If they expire or don’t work, you have protections
